Voici ma nouvelle lecture retour au XXème siècle avec la Grande Guerre
Présentation
Avec Verdun, l'autre bataille décisive de 1916 : un carnage, un champ d'expérimentation technique et un lieu de mémoire pour les
Anciens Combattants.
En décembre 1915, le général Joffre et le général Haig décident pour le 1er juillet une grande offensive sur la Somme. Une fois la
percée effectuée, on l'exploitera, on l'élargira. L'objectif à plus long terme est de reprendre les territoires du Nord occupés par les Allemands. Las, le 21 février 1916, l'ennemi lance sur
Verdun une attaque d'une intensité totalement imprévue qui va complètement contrecarrer les intentions de Joffre. La bataille de la Somme allait être pendant quatre mois et demi une
formidable guerre d'usure et de matériel (les tanks sont utilisés pour la première fois), très meurtrière, dans une boue épouvantable. Les pertes furent effroyables. Dans la seule journée du
1er juillet 1916, sur 100 000 hommes engagés, les Anglais en perdirent 60 000, dont 20 000 morts. Les Français perdirent en quatre mois 136 000 hommes (environ 500 morts et 500 blessés par
jour), contre 179 000 à Verdun. Et pourtant, dans notre mémoire, la Somme est un peu oubliée. Il fallait rappeler ce que fut cette bataille trop souvent occultée par Verdun, la Marne et le
Chemin des Dames.
Alain Denizot, docteur en histoire, a consacré sa thèse d'Etat à Verdun dont il est un spécialiste reconnu. Il est l'auteur de
Verdun 14-18, prix Raymond-Poincaré 1996, Le Sacré-Coeur et la Grande Guerre, Saint-Mihiel, Des poilus aux doughboys, 1914-1918 (NEL) et Douaumont
(Perrin).
